History and origins
Department of Cultural Heritage records distinguish the tradition of Lý-dynasty origins from prominent material remains of the Later Lê restoration and Nguyễn periods. During the Bảo Thái era, 1720–1729, Patriarch Phạm Kim Hưng expanded the temple. It was designated a special national heritage site in 2016; in 2025, it became part of the Yên Tử–Vĩnh Nghiêm–Côn Sơn, Kiếp Bạc complex inscribed by UNESCO.
Architecture & surroundings
The complex includes Tứ Ân Temple, Tam Đức hermitage, Cao Temple, the stupa garden and Ao Miếu. Buildings connect internally while earthen walls enclose the exterior; Thổ Hà bricks, tiles and ceramics create subdued brown tones. The hillside stupa garden commemorates generations of monks and nuns.
Cultural value
The woodblock collection documents scripture carving and printing and the transmission of Buddhist teachings. The temple festival combines gratitude towards patriarchs with Quan họ singing, helping sustain Kinh Bắc’s community culture.
Events & festivals
The traditional festival centres on days 16–18 of the second lunar month. In 2026, it took place on 3–5 April, with Quan họ performances, folk arts and activities honouring patriarchs. Future years’ schedules should follow local announcements.
