Highlights

  • The Inner Keo and Outer Keo complex of Hành Thiện village.
  • Bell tower, timber architecture and traditional carving.
  • Three stelae from the Restored Lê period were designated National Treasures in 2026.

History and origins

The Keo tradition is associated with Zen master Dương Không Lộ and a temple founded under the Lý dynasty. After floods in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, residents relocated and rebuilt the temple. Stelae dating from the early 17th century record the establishment and repair of the temple at Hành Thiện. Outer Keo was built in the 18th century; subsequent restoration added further architectural layers. Both Inner Keo and Outer Keo were designated a Special National Relic in 2016.

Architecture & surroundings

Inner Keo follows a longitudinal axis with a three-entrance gateway, bell tower, Buddhist shrine, sanctuary for the revered master and surrounding corridors. Mortise-and-tenon timber joints and carvings of dragons, flowers and foliage are notable artistic features. The bell tower also serves as the inner gateway and has overlapping roof tiers. The photographs focus on Inner Keo; Outer Keo is a separate component of the heritage complex, so ask for directions if you wish to continue your visit there.

Cultural value

Buddhist worship and commemoration of Zen master Không Lộ are part of village life in Hành Thiện. Villagers work with the heritage management board to care for the site, maintain worship and organize ceremonies. The temple’s three Restored Lê-period stelae were designated National Treasures in the February 2026 recognition round.

Events & festivals

The heritage records describe spring and autumn festivals. The major festival takes place around the middle of the ninth lunar month in memory of Zen master Dương Không Lộ, with processions, traditional boat racing and folk activities. Please consult announcements from the management board and local authorities for each year’s dates, times and programme.
