History and origins
In 1843, after leaving his responsibility for Bảo Quốc Temple, Nhất Định established An Dưỡng Am in Dương Xuân, where he lived a simple life of practice with his mother and disciples. The hermitage later expanded into a temple named Từ Hiếu.
Architecture & surroundings
The temple blends with trees, water and low buildings. Instead of focusing on a single large structure, walk slowly from the gate through the courtyard to appreciate its landscape arrangement.
The approach, greenery, gate and pond create transitions before the worship spaces. Courtyards and roofs sit within quiet scenery; tread softly and avoid gathering across paths while the monastic community is engaged in its activities.
Cultural value
Từ Hiếu is the ancestral temple of the Plum Village tradition. Plum Village materials emphasise continuity between filial devotion, simplicity and mindfulness practice.
The name Từ Hiếu recalls compassion and filial devotion through the story of Patriarch Nhất Định. Understanding its tradition should include its present life of study and practice, rather than treating it solely as a photography destination.
Events & festivals
Commemorations of patriarchs and practice activities follow the monastic community’s schedule. Do not assume that every visit includes a meditation session open to guests; enquire beforehand if you wish to participate.
