History and origins
A 1997 survey found architectural materials that researchers associated with the Trần period. The temple was rebuilt in 1850 and restored in 1924 and 1999. On 19 September 1954, President Hồ Chí Minh rested by the cycad in front of the temple and heard a report on plans to take over Hà Nội; his meeting with officers of the Vanguard Division took place at the Well Temple.
Architecture & surroundings
The front hall, incense hall and main Buddhist sanctuary form an axis shaped like the character 工. The temple has tiled roofs, upturned eaves and images of Buddhas and bodhisattvas; in front are funerary stupas and a timber gateway incorporating a bell tower. The three-crowned cycad is a recognizable feature of the courtyard.
Cultural value
The Buddhist shrine stands beside temples dedicated to the Hùng Kings, reflecting the relationship between Buddhism and the tradition of remembering ancestors. Archaeological investigations help distinguish ancient remains from restored structures.
Events & festivals
The temple welcomes Buddhist worshippers visiting the Hùng Temple complex, particularly during the Hùng Kings’ commemoration season. Please consult temple and heritage-area announcements for ceremonies, group visiting hours and guidance on each occasion.
